From New Hampshire to Alaska, RFID Foes Support Legislative Bans
Kathleen Carroll, HID Global’s director of Government Affairs, keeps abreast of legislative action affecting our industry and technology throughout the United States. The following piece, written by her, explores a number of recent legislative activities confronting the industry, describing their impact on the use of RFID-based technology.

The really bad news about anti-RFID legislation around the country is that it is driven by misinformation and misperceptions about what the technology can and cannot do. Legislation proposed in Alaska, Arizona, New Hampshire, California, and Washington State has singled out radio frequency (RF) technology for regulation and in some cases, promulgates outright bans on the use of the technology.

SmartID™ 13.56 MHz Readers
HID SmartID™ and SmartTRANS™ and SmartTOUCH™ Contactless Smart Card Readers are highly configurable for single technology 13.56 MHz, dual technology 13.56 MHz and 125 kHz and biometric fingerprint technology. Focusing on ISO 14443 technologies, the SmartID family of readers offers compatibility with MIFARE (Sector), DESFire (Application) and PIV credentials and applications. The open architecture, flexible, highly secure and stylish contactless smart cards reader product line provides customers with the most configurable ISO 14443 product line existence.

HID Global Launches ID Accessories
HID Global has recently announced the launch of its new line of ID accessories, including a wide selection of lanyards, retractable reels, badge holders and strap clips that complement HID’s line of ID card printer/encoders, software and materials.

Included in the line are:

• Lanyards – five different types including woven and flat styles are available in seven colors and five attachment styles.
• Retractable reels – four reel styles, sixteen colors and two clip options offer convenient options for presentation of cards to proximity or magnetic stripe readers.

NOTICE OF DISCONTINUED PRODUCTS - MR Access Magnetic Stripe Readers
HID Global has recently notified customers that it will be discontinuing its line of MR Access magnetic stripe readers and cards due to increased manufacturing costs and the declining market demand for such products. Instead of passing costs on to our customers, HID Global has decided to stop offering these products for sale.

A: IP (Internet Protocol) Access is one of the buzzwords in the security business today.  We'll take a concise look at the concept, but first a little history.  Ethernet in buildings has been around now for more than 30 years.  It started as a means of connecting dumb terminals to mainframe computers.  Early iterations operated at less than one million Bytes (MegaBytes or MB) per second and the computer department (there was no IT yet) was very protective of their network.
