Approaching New ID Card Printing Products with a “Green” Perspective

According to a recent Neilson report, in just over the timespan of one year, the willingness of consumers to pay more for products and services provided by companies committed to positive environmental and social change increased from 55 percent in 2014 to 72 percent in 2015.

In alignment with the increasingly environmental conscious consumer trend, HID Global has recently introduced FARGO® PolyGuard™ LMX Overlaminates for use with the FARGO® DTC5500LMX ID Card Printer and Laminator.   These overlaminates are applied to card credentials to create a more durable and longer lasting credential.   The unique environmentally friendly feature of this new product is its “wasteless” approach.

As we continue to live and work in an increasingly “green” world, HID Global is proud to know that our design change has resulted in a 92% reduction in post-consumer waste for our customers. We estimate that over five years, this product will have a landfill avoidance of over 50 tons of material.

The previous generation design of HID overlaminates used a plastic-film carrier and two spools for handling of the overlaminate patches.  In this older design, lamination patches are adhered to a strip of clear film known as "carrier film" that is connected between two spools. During the printing process, the card is passed from the main printer into a lamination chamber, or module, where the lamination patch is then applied to the card. After completion of the lamination process the carrier film, which has no other use than to act as a "carrier" of the overlaminate patch until it is applied to a card, ends up as waste.  Using this traditional lamination method, an organization will end up producing a considerable amount of this waste - especially when there is a high volume of cards to be produced. Collectively and over time, this can have a measurable environmental impact to landfill contribution.

The new generation FARGO PolyGuard LMX Overlaminates utilizes a “tear-off” method – similar to tearing off a piece of paper towel, so the carrier film is completely eliminated.  Wasteless lamination has proven to be very cost effective, reducing lamination consumables costs as much as 50 percent while maintaining the highest levels of security and durability. This subsequently results in a significantly lower cost-per-card and total cost of ownership. This makes wasteless lamination an ideal alternative for cost-conscious companies, universities, government agencies or any organization that has strict budget limitations.

This “wasteless lamination” adds to the already “green” product in the FARGO DTC5500LMX ID Card Printer and Laminator.  This printer has been GreenCircle certified for a 66% reduction in energy consumption and features a 10x improvement in heat-up time response. To learn more about cost-effective and eco-friendly card issuance, download our wasteless lamination white paper.
