WEEE Compliance in Europe

Collection and Recycling Arrangements in the United Kingdom

Under the UK Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations, for HID products bought before August 2005, HID is required to provide arrangements for the collection, treatment, recycling and recovery of WEEE that the new purchase replaces, on a one-for-one, like-for-like basis. The old product that your new HID product replaces is referred to as "Historic WEEE". HID is also required to provide arrangements for the collection, treatment, recycling and recovery of HID products bought from HID after August 2005, when that product eventually becomes waste. This is referred to as "New WEEE". HID is required to provide these arrangements starting from 1 July 2007. HID products are very competitively priced. Any new increase in operating costs for manufacturers such as HID is normally reflected in a price increase in the product. However, instead of increasing the prices of our products, HID has decided to share these new environmental costs directly with our customers. We believe in being transparent with you on any new environmental costs that our products need to address. Our approach to sharing these new environmental costs is:

  • HID pays for the costs of treatment, recycling and recovery of the WEEE to meet the targets set by the WEEE Regulations;
  • HID pays for the costs of data management and reporting to the Environment Agency to demonstrate compliance with all administrative requirements of the WEEE Regulations;
  • You pay for transportation of your WEEE to HID in the UK.

Sending your UK WEEE for recycling

HID will cover the cost of treatment, recycling and recovery of the product upon its arrival at HID at our EMEA office in Shannon, Ireland. It is your responsibility to arrange and pay for costs of collection and transportation to: HID Global Corporation (WEEE Department), C/O Kuehne + Nagel Ireland Ltd, Unit J3 Smithstown Ind. Est, Shannon, Co Clare V14 N886 Republic of Ireland. In order to meet UK Duty of Care Regulations for waste disposal, you should use one of the following carriers (which hold a valid Waste Carriers licence):

To comply with the UK Duty of Care Regulations, the transport of your waste to HID must be accompanied by suitable documentation. You must also keep a signed copy of this documentation for two years. In order to meet this requirement please download the Recycling Label for UK Customers. Complete the label with your company details and attach it to a suitable box for transport to HID. Please note that all New WEEE that arises from the purchase of HID products is classed as non-hazardous waste.

WEEE compliance within the rest of the European Union

HID sells product from the UK to distributors in other EU member states on an "ex works" basis. The distributor acts as the importer of the equipment into their member state. Thus the distributor has the legal responsibility to:

  • Register as the WEEE producer in their member state.
  • Finance arrangements for collection and recycling of WEEE arising from HID products that the distributor sells in their member state.

In this instance please contact your distributor for recycling information. If you have any questions about the recycling of WEEE then please submit a service ticket to open a case at the following link: https://www.hidglobal.com/compliance-certifications/compliance-case.

General information about HID and WEEE

HID Corporation Limited is a member of THINKSTEP's UK Producer Compliance Scheme - our registration number is WEE/HH0078UU. HID has a recycling contract with EOL IT and SWEEEP (AATF). Section 29 of the WEEE Regulations requires HID to provide annual information on the quantities and categories of electrical and electronic equipment put on the market, reused, recycled and recovered within the UK. This will be managed through THINKSTEP. For the prioritisation of WEEE, HID has reviewed the business and technical opportunities for testing and repair of WEEE returned to HID for reuse as whole appliances. HID has concluded that testing and repair of WEEE for reuse as whole appliances is not appropriate at this time. HID will keep this situation under review.
