RFID Asset Tracking Best Practices in the Oil & Gas Industry

Engineering, drilling and construction company Saipem, which transports assets such as large pipe stacks worldwide, needed safe, automated asset tracking that would work in the presence of steel and seawater at temperatures of -50°C (-58°F) to 50°C (122°F).

HID supplied ATEX-compliant passive tags for hazardous environments for on-metal and plastic installations, working with Saipem to pilot the asset tagging system across a number of offshore oil drilling bases.

The result? Accurate tracking and locating for valuable assets from pipes to buoys, saving money and improving control. In addition, the remote identification system boosted personnel safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is RFID, and how is it used in the oil and gas industry?

RFID, or radio-frequency identification, is a technology that uses radio waves to identify and track objects. In the oil and gas industry, RFID is used for asset tracking, inventory management, compliance, and equipment maintenance.

2. What are the primary benefits of using RFID in the oil and gas sector?

RFID technology offers benefits such as enhanced asset visibility, improved inventory management, increased safety through personnel monitoring and mustering, streamlined maintenance operations and reduced operational costs.

3. Can RFID be used in hazardous environments common in the oil and gas industry?

Yes, RFID systems can be designed to meet hazardous area certifications and are used in various oil and gas environments, including offshore platforms, refineries and drilling sites.

4. How does RFID improve asset tracking and management in the oil and gas industry?

RFID allows for real-time tracking of equipment, tools, and assets, enabling accurate monitoring, reducing loss and optimizing asset utilization.

5. Can RFID technology withstand harsh environmental conditions in oil and gas facilities?

Yes, RFID tags and readers can be made to withstand extreme temperatures, exposure to chemicals, and physical stress, making them suitable for challenging environments.

6. What role does RFID play in ensuring personnel safety in the oil and gas sector?

RFID can monitor location of personnel in real-time, enhancing safety by enabling rapid response in emergencies, ensuring compliance with safety protocols and managing access to restricted areas. With active IoT solutions using technology like LoRaWAN, a simple but effective panic button can be used to locate workers in times of danger or duress.

7. How does RFID improve compliance with regulatory requirements in the industry?

RFID enables tags to be encoded with current compliance information so they show the date a specific item was last checked or validated at point of use. This prevents using equipment that is not in compliance or that is in need of inspection.

8. What types of assets and equipment can RFID effectively track in the oil and gas sector?

RFID technology can be used to track a wide range of assets, including drilling equipment, valves, pipelines, tools, safety gear, vehicles, and even personnel. Its versatility makes it suitable for various asset management needs in the industry.

9. How does RFID help optimize maintenance and reduce downtime for critical equipment in the oil and gas industry?

RFID facilitates proactive maintenance by tracking equipment usage and maintenance schedules. It automates maintenance alerts based on usage data, ensuring timely servicing and reducing unplanned downtime, which is crucial for critical equipment in the oil and gas sector.

10. How is RFID used in the oil and gas sector?

RFID can be used in upstream, midstream and downstream oil and gas operations. This includes use cases like drilling, exploration, production, and distribution.
